Here is a list of activities and establishments in Cape Town that offer a discount to senior citizens
ACTIVITIES
Kirstenbosch Gardens – Free on Tuesdays, except public holidays.
Robben Island Museum Tours – R250 on Mondays and Wednesdays.
City Sightseeing Red Bus – Pensioner price: R245.
City Sightseeing Red Bus and lunch – Pensioner price: R328.
City Sightseeing Canal or Harbour cruise – Pensioner price: R45.
Ceres steam train to the Elgin Market – 20% discount.
Spur Steak Ranches - Seniors’ menu, every day.
Ster Kinekor - 22% discount, except on Tuesday half-price specials.
Metrorail - 50% discount, every day, off-peak (9:30am – 2:30pm).
Cape Point – Flying Dutchman Funicular – R52 for a return ticket.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway – R130 for a return ticket.
Two Oceans Aquarium – R185 all-day / R140 from 3pm – every day.
The Iziko South African Museum – Pensioner price: R20.
Castle of Good Hope – Pensioner price: R25.
World of Birds – Pensioner price: R85.
The Cape Town Wheel – Half price every day: R95
GROCERIES & FOOD
Makro – Over 60s get 10% off of general purchases and 5% off food purchases when using a Seniors card. You also get priority entry to the store and checkout. There are several types of products that are not included in the discount offering, so please check the terms and conditions.
Game – Over 60s can get a 10% discount, any day of the week, on purchases up to the cost of R3,000.00.
Food Lover’s Market – Some stores offer a pensioners’ discount, one day out of the week. Please contact your nearest store to find out if they have a pensioners’ discount day and which day it falls on.
SPAR – Various branches will have different deals and days on which pensioners can benefit. Speak to the manager at your local branch to find out if there is a pensioners’ day.
ENTERTAINMENT
Nu Metro – Over the 60s can enjoy a discount on movies, with ID. Not on Wednesday specials.
Ster-Kinekor – 22% off movies every day when signed up to the SK Club, except Tuesday specials.
The Barnyard Theatre – 50% off Sunday Afternoon shows at selected theatres. Call in or book at the theatre.
TRAVEL
CapeNature -If you are 60 years or older and have a valid SA ID, you qualify for Cape Nature’s senior citizen discount of 30% off all self-catering and camping facilities. Call in to secure the 30%. It can be used Monday to Sunday except for long weekends (they have opted to approve the discount on Easter Weekend only) and the December school holidays.
SANParks – Enjoy the delights of any of the many parks under the SANParks umbrella at a discounted tariff, if you are 60 years or older. This applies only to certain months of the year and excludes Fridays, Saturdays and long weekends. The discounts are for camping or staying in accommodation and can be up to 40% off the normal rate.
SANBI National Gardens – Over 60 get free entry on Tuesdays, unless its a public holiday. Call ahead to confirm whether the gardens have this deal applied. Some of the venues in the gardens, including restaurants, also offer a discount.
City Sightseeing Buses – There are several discounted ticket options for pensioners in Cape Town.
Intercape – 15% discount to all senior citizens over 60 years.
Hertz – If you are 55 years or older, a hire car from Hertz’s ‘A group’ is discounted - Use the promo code 55PLUS.
AA (Automobile Association) – Over 60s get a substantial discount for an annual AA Membership.
Tiger Wheel & Tyre – Pensioners qualify for discounts on in-store services on Tuesdays.
SHOPPING
V&A Waterfront – If you are 60 and over, you can apply for a card at the information kiosk (or online) that can be used at selected stores for a discount. Free parking is also available anywhere at the V&A from Monday – Friday, 9 am – 2 pm.
HEALTH
Clicks – The Clicks’ ClubCard Seniors programme and earns Double Points on Wednesdays.
Dischem – The 60 Plus Programme gives pensioners double points on Wednesday, except on prescriptions. They offer a free blood pressure test each month if you fill your chronic medication scripts at a Dischem Pharmacy, discounts on selected salon treatments, and invitations to the 60+ Pensioners Teas.
Torga Optical – A Pensioners Promotion with three options, redeemable country-wide.
To Your Health, upstairs in Kenilworth Centre – 10% pensioner’s discount on Wednesdays.
HOME
Property Rates – As a pensioner, you qualify for a rebate on your property rates of between 40% and 100%. Each municipality will have different requirements, so be sure to check online or call your local municipality. Most will need you to fill in a form to start the process.
Builders Warehouse offers a 10% discount on Wednesdays. One needs to apply for their pension card.
