Chairman’s Report

Welcome all.  We have found a wonderful new home at this Western Cape Bridge Club.  It is way more spacious than our previous place, and has a huge and accessible parking space. Let’s hope the City will dither before they get around to their plan to build low cost housing right where we are sitting now.

Review and acceptance of the 2025 AGM minutes was proposed and seconded from the floor, and accepted by the members.

Our dedicated committee of six members works hard to keep our Atlantic Seaboard U3a going.  Margaret Rawicz, last month’s exciting speaker here, has joined us as our long sought after Secretary.   Hilary holds our purse strings and will soon report on our satisfyingly healthy financial shape.   Julie continues to find our great new speakers. She is always open to your suggestions.  She also takes us on tours, most recently to a remarkable art exhibition at the Jewish museum.   Sue is in charge of communications.  She has managed, with Robert’s help, to give us a state-of-the-art website where you can find out what’s going on in our U3a at any time. Then there is Sue’s new successful initiative, the theatre club, which is growing in new members for every excursion.  Sheena is the new manager of our database from which all communications come. At last count we have 139 members, a jump of 20-25%. Well done you! Sonya manages our new What’s App facility.

So please consider joining our committee. We only meet for two hours once a month, and remain in touch on WhatsApp. And we actually do have a lot of fun together serving you third-agers.

We’ve had a wonderful array of speakers this year:

February: Rosalind Spears, who spoke on Kasturba, the wife of Mahatma Ghandi.

March: Juliet Prowse, who spoke about her Aunt, the famous Hollywood actress and dancer, also named Juliet Prowse.

April: Esme Senekal, who spoke about a home s he ran for special-needs adults.

May: Theo Jansen: who spoke on how to have a useful retirement.

June: Margaret Rawicz: who spoke on My Exodus -Her journey following in the footsteps of Moses.

Your existing committee members Julie, Leonard, Sue, Hilary, Margaret  and Sheena are prepared to stand again. Do we have any proposals for new nominations to join our committee? Proposals were received and seconded from the floor, and a new Committee was voted in.

Also huge thanks to our volunteers Veronica Garde, Carol Goslar, Sheena Kaal, Adele Saven, and others who manage our two entry front desks so efficiently every second Thursday. 

We had one interesting new course this year, but are always looking for more.

Join me in applauding Shirley and Thabo for preparing this huge hall for our events, and always having it ready for us. Thanks for those of you who help set up the tea/coffee facility.

Thanks to all of you for your ongoing support and please try and draw in any of your friends, family or associates to join us.  Its good fun and keeps us young and on our feet, if not on our toes.

And as I hand over to Hilary for the budget approval, a warm shout out to Ronnie Glass, who helped us make sense of every R20 or R30 that we receive, and who will audit our submission to SARS.
